In 2017, Kuanysh Bakirov graduated from Suleyman Demirel University (Almaty, Kazakhstan) with a major in Information Systems. He first became acquainted with programming, statistics and calculus. At that time, he did not know yet where and how to implement this knowledge. Therefore, he decided to do his masters in the same field at the Eurasian National University named after L.N. Gumilyov (Astana, Kazakhstan). Through this learning process, he devoted a lot of time to science.
Kuanysh is the scholarship holder of the “Abai-Verne” programme. This is a joint programme between the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic. Based on the close relationships of these two countries, option to obtain an invaluable experience in France is provided.
Why did you join the Applied MSc Data Science & AI?
My experience as a database developer in a government structure and as an analyst in an international bank helped me to understand that data is essential. The use of productive techniques such as visualization, optimisation, machine learning algorithms specific areas give an immense result. The Applied MSc Data Science & AI programme at DSTI aims to give students comprehension of the main methods of machine intelligence and how to apply them in the business field. Moreover, this programme allows us to become competent in the field of Deep Learning, algorithmic models and statistics.
6 months of study and 6 months of internship. A distinctive and golden opportunity in order to apply the awareness in the field and formulate professional goals.
An individual approach to each student. In addition to the daily support, the staff is also helping each student with their CV and internship interview.
DSTI collaborates with IT giants such as Amazon and SAS through which enterprise-level certifications can be obtained.

What are the main skills you want to acquire?
I am sure that at DSTI I can gain demanding skills as programming, data analysis, and data modeling. At the same time, I develop my communication and teamwork skills, as well as my curiosity due to the environment of international students coming from different backgrounds. According to me, these skills are the most important for both the professional and personal life.
How do you envision your role in the field of Data Science & AI?
A specialist in Data Science & AI can work in different fields. I believe this is the main advantage of this job. However, it is important that the field in which you work besides income delivers pleasure and interest. I see myself as a project developer in a field that impacts directly the society. For instance, the field of health, education, etc. I would be happy to create something that will impact positively the life of some people.
Do you have advices for future abroad students?
I would recommend them to set goals and to work on it. Do not be afraid to try something new and to move out from your comfort zone. What does not kill us makes us stronger!
Have you brought something special from Kazakhstan with you?
According to our tradition, when you visit someone as a guest it’s not acceptable to go without a present. Following this custom, I brought with me the famous Kazakhstan chocolates and upon arrival I gave it to the first people I met.
